A poem dedicated to one of my best friends.
Funny...

After endless hours on the phone
Conversation makes us hoarse
And eyelids press for want of sleep
Reluctant goodnights
While dawn steals our tears away

After so many mail-letter cards
Birthday trinket, just-because gifts
Nodding off as you talk... and talk
Sleepy goodnights
Awakened by the receiver's click

After counting days until we met
More than distance comes between us
Nix late night calls, your voice, no more
One more goodnight
Just 'cause you tell me I wouldn't

After so many miles, one hell of a fight
Standing, nervous, at your doorstep
Hoping for no answer
You smile
As I knew you would

After months of waiting
It's like the seam was never torn
Fate dictated I play The Fool
Stupid jester
Pretending to know my secrets

Destiny knows better-

After all those years...
You still make me laugh.
