Leaving someone behind is hard, especially when they don't love you back.
I speed away,
Off into the sunset.
Only my trusty steed and I.
Just like those old time movies.

But there’s no heroic fanfare.
Only the frozen, empty air.
Only an empty seat where I rest my
Empty hand. Only the soft purr of my engine
To comfort me.

Tears are building up,
And those weather blades won’t help.
Screams of regret,
Nails on a chalkboard,
Fill my mind, drowning out
My engine’s lullaby.

In each passing car,
I see you. The reflections on each
Silvery puddle,
An analogy to your eyes.
Why do you still haunt my
Senses, when I know I can’t have you?

And off goes the hero,
To nowhere important.
Only he’s not a hero.
He’s a stray dog,
Looking for a home,
A warm lap to sleep in.
It wasn’t back there.
I’ve got to keep driving,
And hope
That when I return…
