Inspiration for this poem came from a painting done by Kathe Kollwitz.
Battlefield

The angel has come
Death is among them
Blood, sweat, and tears
Fall down the faces
Of the wounded soldiers

They fall to the ground
Thinking of their loved ones
The life they would have
If not for the battle
Raging on around them

Lifeless forms and shadows
Grow larger and darker.
Eyes frozen open
Full of shock
Not believing what has happened.

Their lives are all over
Stolen from them
Their souls reach out
But feel nothing while,
Falling into the dark, damp nothingness

The angel has come
Death is among them
Blood, sweat, and tears
Fall down the faces
Of the wounded soldiers
