A past friend, a railroad engineer. I used to play for him once in a while.
I played a tune upon your grave

I played a tune upon your grave and asked if you’d forgive me
For not coming by while you were alive and play again before you died
Your illness was too much for my brother to accept
He could not handle all your pain nor could he say goodbye

From time to time when I come home I like to drop by all alone
and play a tune upon your grave and leave a pick beside your stone
I play the songs I know you liked and hope somehow you hear
Then put my guitar in its case, drive away and shed a tear

You rode the rails for many years and sang the tunes that brought you cheer
About the trains and stops and towns with all the people standing around
Rail Road Lady, Faded Love, Folsom Prison Blues and Wings of a Dove
All the songs that you once knew, I will play and sing for you

So rest my friend until the time when I can come and sing again
And leave a pick beside your stone and think about how long it’s been
For the train is at the station and brake mans packed the gear
This train is bound for glory and it has its engineer
