a poem I wrote about 5 years ago
I am your own worst enemy who leads you far astray.
I am the white light on a dune, the red one in a bay.
I am the sink hole in a marsh with quiet leaves atop
Whose weathered state sways you to think your worries are for naught.

I am your own worst enemy, seducing you with treats,
With trite rewards, so undeserved, for your abandoned feats.
I am the echo in your mind of what you know as true,
Yet amplified a thousand times to give false hope to you.

I am your own worst enemy, the question in your head,
So when at last you might succeed, you hesitate, instead.
I am the might that drives you on, defeats you in the end,
Conspiring behind your eyes while feigning as your friend.

I am your own worst enemy who leads your heart to dream,
Who bends your ear with Siren’s call, to drown you in the sea.
One from whom you cannot run, for all that you may do:
I am your own worst enemy. I, of course, am you.
