It happens when we're young
It was an ordinary day. The sun came up in the usual place.
There was teethbrushing and eggs over easy.
Somewhere between the teethbrushing and the bedtime story,
something extraordinary happened.
There was no shiver of prescience,
no raven flapping at the window.
When I looked up, time stood still.
Not absolutely still,
but slowed to the space in time where spirit soars transcended.
I stood, caught between one breath and another.
She smiled a radiance that wrote secret promises on my heart.
I suppose she said something.
I was unable to answer.
I was too busy swimming in the seafoam green of her eyes.
Something worked its way to my forebrain
while the lesser parts of my psyche were dancing and grunting in the firelight.

A scent.

I longed to spend an eternity in the garden
that grew those flowers.
