Angels of Death

One single day during the dark months of snow,
When the weather is bitter and people are lonely,
The Angels of Death descend upon the Earth.
They come to relive those who suffer and condemn the evil.

I was once written on their black list,
Under the seldom-used term “Suffering.”
They took pity on my poor and tortured soul,
Trying to give me a gift of tranquility.

I can still vividly recall the night they arrived,
To send me on a merciful journey.
Away from all the excruciating pain my heart held.
Yet, despite the temptation, this is what I declared.

“Dark angels of graceful being, powerful being,
Do not take pity on one as blessed and honored as me.
Instead, pity those having not felt the feather light touch of love,
For they are the ones who need more pity than any.

“I, at least, have felt the joy of romance,
Not holding back as I flew as high as the stars,
Up above the white clouds with wings of pure gold.
I have experienced ultimate bliss that others often lack.

“The surreal music that only a privileged few hear,
Has passed through these undeserving ears.
The feel of immortality has touched this unworthy body.
I have lived to the fullest, while others are stuck in ignorance.”

As they looked at me strangely with empty eye sockets,
They raised a skeleton hand, fingers gently touching my neck,
As they softly whispered a praise in my head,
One of comfort, hope, and surprising admiration.

They nodded together and murmured as one,
“Go with our blessing, show others how this love feels.
For this is the love of God, who has no restrictions or reservations.
And never forget, Azrael, he who has God always wins in the end.”

With that, they spread their mighty dark wings
As they took flight in search of the next on their list.
I stood and watched, filled with hope, as they vanished,
Wishing only that I had her back to spend my life with.
