This is a spin off to human mortals' constant quest for immortality, and its downsides.
Us mortals dream of life,
Eternal existence in one breath.
While you ancient immortals
Sit and daydream about death.

Etched in time, eternally still
No deadlines for you to meet.
But are those of us who count the years
To be considered beneath?

Days are more precious
When they’re higher in demand.
Memories more treasured
If they can be counted on one hand.

Everything is lovelier,
Bathed with light, seeming to glow
When your heart beats are numbered
And you continue to grow.

But you sit on the bank of time
Untouched, watching its river flow away.
You long to be swept back into current
But immortality stands in the way.

The days stretch out like years,
The world long since explored.
Color slowly drains out of life
Which is no longer its own reward.

What’s the point of smelling the roses
When they’ll smell just as sweet the next day?
If after speaking for a million years
What else is there left to say?

Nothing is urgent
Nothing is pressed
When you don’t have to embrace
The waiting arms of death.

You’re trapped, weighed down,
By the thing that sets you free.
You’re the master of time
Yet it has you on one knee.

So as a curious lowly mortal
I can’t but ask once more.
When you live forever…

Exactly what do you live for?
