The Hairy Toe

At the top of the garden, Jack saw a crow,

In its beak there was what looked like a toe!

A toe in the beak of a little black crow

“I must be wrong,” said Jack “but I’ve got to know”.

Jack ran towards the little black crow,

Who must have thought “its time to go”

Up he flew into a nearby tree, whistling and tweeting,

He was as mad as can be

Leaving behind the surprise he had found

Leaving it there next to Jack, on the ground

A toe! A toe!  Jack was right don’t you know

Who is its owner? Where did they go?

It was short, fat and hairy,

The nail was sharp, brown and scary

A monkey? A bear? A wolf or a bat?

A monster? A vampire? A witch or her cat?

Jack picked up the toe and took it inside,

Ran up to his room, the toe he must hide

He placed it inside a little black box,

And put it under his pillow, wrapped up with socks

Then Jack and his brothers all had their tea,

Messing and playing whilst watching TV

“Right, that’s it, its now time for bed,

School in the morning you need sleep” dad said

Up the stairs, the brothers, they went,

Cleaned teeth, washed hands, then to bed they were sent

Dad kissed them all and then said “goodnight,”

Closed the door slowly and turned out the light!

Jack lay there in his bed wide awake,

Wondering weather he’d made a mistake

“Maybe I should not have collected that toe,

It would still be outside, not under my pillow”

It was then he heard a noise that was strange and quite queer,

A noise that filled Jack with horror and fear!

A shuffling and scraping from out in the yard,

A grunting, a snarling and a foot falling hard

Then he heard a voice that was scary and low,

Saying “where is my short fat hairy toe”

Jack lay there fixed tight to his bed,

A million pictures ran through his head

The noise was inside now climbing the stairs,

“Where is my toe all covered in hairs”

Outside the door something started to speak

The doorknob turned with a clunk and a squeak

Jack covered his head with the blanket and started to scream,

Then awoke in the morning, had it all been a dream?

Jack quickly searched under his squashed pillow,

To make sure there was no socks, no box, no fat hairy toe

Relieved to find nothing under his pillow to dread

Jack layback down and “phew!” he said

But if you find in your garden, in the beak of a crow,

Anything that looks like a fat hairy toe

Don’t box it, don’t socks it or put it to bed

Leave it alone and forget it instead.

THE END
