To my wife for Loving Day.
Almond skin dipped in cream,
Candied lips wrapped in a dream.
When I was lonely you came to my side,
And opened your heart for me to abide.
You lifted me up in a valkyries soar.
You helped me learn what love is for.
Your skin is dark but mine is light,
So there are those who see us with spite.
Yet God teaches us to love one another,
And treat each other like sister and brother.
We’re all sons of Adam and daughters of Eve,
So how could we love and not interweave?
If God has sent you to be my Gibraltar,
And to pick me up when I should falter,
Then who are mortals to say He is wrong?
How can they say that our love doesn’t belong?
What color is love, can anyone say?
Just how could we keep God’s will at bay?
All men are equal and should be of one accord,
For the color of love is the color of the Lord.
Our blood runs red and our love burns afire,
A mountainous inferno, a bright and flaming pyre.
But without you I am cold, a lost and lonely child;
Beaten up and bloodied, detested and reviled.
So, thank you my darling for loving me just as I am,
As for the thoughts of others, we need not give a damn
.
