when you know things will go bad
perhaps for my last time
i held his hand again,
with the lonely stranger feeling
of things i nearly understand...
somehow my mind will know
to snapshot this forever
(the warmth of our joined palms
that even now seems cold).
i know it, i've known it
maybe forever
maybe for moments
i see him, his hair in wind currents
his eyes wondering,
open.

I can't ignore the gooseflesh,
the raised hairs on my neck,
the way our eyes lock together
through the storm ...
like rain, like wind
so ominous
ominous
like a headless angel in my pocket
we hold each other like it's cheating a goddess,
knowing she will avenge --
all the sorts of things that
can go wrong with a wink...
a sly eyelid drooping
a coy, bitter warning
encoded in these chilling things
i want to understand.
