A slam poem from a girl's point of view about unwritten expectations and guidelines.
Perfectly.
That's what I'm to be.
All the time.
Everyday.
Never given a break.
Never encouraged.
Expectations.
Thick like smoke,
filling my brain.
I always carry them with me.
In the back of my mind.
Filed away.
Never opened.
Always there.
Fighting my instinct.
Saying I'm all wrong.
Be smarter.
Be prettier.
Be popular.
You don't have a boyfriend?
Strange.
Try it.
Try being perfect.
It's fun.
Fun to be perfect.
I am.
You should try it.
I'm smart,
Why do you get bad grades?
I'm pretty,
Why aren't you?
Well I'm not you.
I won't be.
Pressure can't make me.
It can tear me down.
I'll never get up.
Down forever.
Forever alone.
Without you.
Or anyone.
Just me.
Imperfect me.
Well I'm not sorry anymore.
Not sorry I'm not you.
Not sorry you're disappointed.
Because this is all I can be.
