A poem for a contest about getting sunburned
Taking a ride with the top down
Mama got a new car
Back in “55”
A little brown chevy
And she took us for a ride

Now I was just eight years old
But I knew enough to wonder
Why was the sun beating down?
What happened if it thundered?

You see it seemed so strange
There was no top on mama’s car
What would we do if it rained?
It didn’t seem to be up to par

Mama laughed and told me
Don’t worry there’s a top
It folds down, when we want
We can put it up when we stop

But I did enjoy the wind in may face
And the sun beating down
As we drove on forever
Covering most of the town

Finally we got home
But something seemed amiss
My face was burning hot
When mama gave me a kiss

It seemed we got too much sun
Riding in that car
Or maybe just drove too much
Or drove a little too far

And now me and mama both
Are sitting here a burning
We should have put the top up
It’s a thing they call learning

So if you ever get the chance
To ride in a car with no top
Cover up from head to toe
Or the burning will not stop.
