This is a poem I wrote for my Creative Writing Class.
As I sit before the chaos, I close my eyes, I listen
I hear music
A woman in heals - drumming against the sidewalk
I can tell she’s late by the fast paced beats
A man whistling as he walks, creating a melody
Hoping it will lighten the long trek to his inevitable 9-5

Listening harder…I attempt to engage in muffled conversations
Like a broken record player, fading in – fading out
Culture screams out at me
Voices like poetry as I try to decipher their meaning
In a flash they disappear -- Camouflaged into the endless sea of sound

Buses, taxis, and cars scream at each other with their fowl mouths
The subway tries to join in on the bickering
But they can only hear a stifled roar from below
More people, more footsteps
With constant and rhythmic stomps,
They are soldiers, marching onward

Like busy bees, they are frantically rushing, they don’t stop
I’m lost in these overlooked noises; I’m fascinated by their unnoticed song
I wish everyone could sit before the chaos, close their eyes, and listen
They would hear the music
