“Lucifer's Hammer redux”
by Steve Tripp
last modified on 10/3/05

The sky trembled pale and shimmering,
and opened up into space.
Glistening pillar of fire from above.
Pressure in our ears, and a weight on our chests.
Our breath labored, we watch,
fascinated at the beauty of the instrument
of our demise.

Rolling thunder shakes us.
Then Lucifer's loving touch, and the earth beneath us swells,
throwing us to the ground.
There we lay, prostrate at the feet of our executioner.
Adoring, and unable to look away.
We knew it would happen, that this day would come.
Some feared it, some prayed for it,
but all stand now and stare.  Mouths agape at its beauty.

The hot winds will soon sear the flesh from our bones,
and we will go away.
Some to their heaven, some to their hell, and some just
into the ground.
