a state of nostalgia..
Love, interrupted

After fourteen years, Melina randomly bumped into Neville at the bank. She didn’t know whether to hug him, or smack him in the face. She decided to take the normal approach.
“Neville? How have you been?” she asked, trying to hide her emotions. Seeing his face sent her mind into nostalgia, a place she didn’t want to go back to. She didn’t want to remember their nonexistent relationship, and all the memories tied into that. Melina tried to push back the memory of Neville having the nerve to send her a wedding invitation in the mail, two years after they broke off their “bond”.
“Melina? Hi, oh wow it’s been--

“--Fourteen years,” Melina said, finishing his sentence.

“Yeah, fourteen long years,” Neville replied.

Melina tried to ignore the emphasis put on “long”. Don’t remind me, she thought. Neville couldn’t stop staring into her eyes; those eyes that creased when she went into a laughing frenzy, and those eyes that cried doleful tears on the day he decided it was time for them to end.

“So, how’s your wife? How’s life in general?” Melina asked. Life...without me?

“Amy’s fine, and so are the kids,” Neville replied.

“That’s great, just great,” Melina replied. She honestly didn’t care about Neville and his life with Amy, all she wanted to do was make her deposit, and leave. But. there was something about Neville that kept her near him; she believed that man put a spell on her as soon as they met, fourteen years prior. The Neville spell never wore off either, it just went dormant.

“Yeah, I guess. So, how about you? Heard you’re engaged,” Nevile said. Melina rolled her eyes and said, “That was two years ago, and don’t remind me. I’m currently single, but I’ve been on a few dates.” Too much information. Should’ve kept him guessing, like he’d done so many times before, Melina thought. Neville didn’t say anything, just kept looking into those eyes. Melina took notice in that, and she couldn’t help but smile.

“Do you wanna...keep in touch? Hey, let’s have dinner tonight,” Neville stated. Melina looked at him, trying to decipher the underlying message.

“Um, I don’t know...possibly another time,” she replied.

“Maybe, okay. Well, I gotta go now. I’ll be seeing you around,” Neville replied. He walked away, and in his mind replayed that night. A pang of guilt stung his heart. Melina watched as he walked out of the bank, and a pang of hurt stung hers. Yet, while they were being reminded of unpleasant memories, they couldn’t help but think of all the unfinished business between them. They smiled, and went on with their lives.
