For my Dad, to whom I owe so much of who I am.
Event Horizon
(11/14/12)

There is a darkness that absorbs the light,
beyond which we can’t see.
When you know there’s no return,
why do you keep looking?

You gaze away, forever lost.
You say the peril’s awesome.
I remember you - the You I knew
before you fell off...
before you crossed the Event Horizon.

You used to wonder into space
where the blue fades out to black.
You wandered out and further out
‘til we couldn’t pull you back.

Between the rescues and roiling skies,
we lived and sometimes laughed.
We tried to turn the bad to good
as we churned down the twisting path.

Now you gaze away, forever lost.
You say the peril’s awesome.
I remember you - the You I knew
before you flew off...
before you crossed the Event Horizon.

Sometimes you blink for a moment or wink
and I think I see your soul,
but each reunion brings another death
when you slide back down the hole.

You slip away and you’re lost again.
I know, the peril’s awesome.
I remember you – the You I knew
before you fell off...
before you crossed the Event Horizon.

I see a glimmer in the fading light.
These flickers might get through.
I’ll hold you close and keep the dream
‘til I cross and see you soon.

You gaze away, forever lost.
You say the peril’s awesome.
I’ll remember you – the You I knew
until I fall off...
until I cross the Event Horizon.
