letting you go
The Wishing Well

One day I felt the longing to go back to where we met
The kids were grown and doing well but I can‘t forget

You and I were so very young and completely blind
The war came and you left me and the kids behind

The night before you left we went to our secret place
You were strong while wiping the tears from my face

I asked you if you were frightened because I surely was
You said you could go through anything because of love

We sat there on the old bench and held each other tight
Making these moments last on this saddest of all nights

At our special place that made our dreams come true
You said make a wish one more time just me and you

He brought out his memento from childhood days
He found it one day after his father went far away

His father said I have little to leave just this box
A note was pinned saying use with loving thoughts

We stood up and kissed like there was no tomorrow
We both kissed this penny with so very much sorrow

We both threw it in with love and dreaded the moment
You promised it would come back to me if you couldn't

There never was another that could replace my man
I am making this trip holding the penny in my hand

I had to go back there now that all my work is done
Thank you for being there when my heart felt numb

I know the angels are lighting your path  brightly
Bending down in prayer my miracle held tightly
