A poem I wrote tha was inspired by the book - The Cross and The Switchblade
The Preacher and His Friend

A Preacher stood on his soapbox
He preached but no one seemed to care
An Evil man walked up to him
And said, “You best beware"

The Preacher told the man
"Jesus will turn his back on you"
The Evil man screamed that he didn't care
what Jesus wants or what he will do

The Preacher got down on his knees
And he started to pray
The Evil man said, “Don’t pray for me”
“God doesn’t love me anyway”

The Preacher stood up and asked,
"Don’t you feel God’s love?"
“I don’t feel anything” said the Evil man
“Because I’ve been cursed by the angels above”

The Preacher looked into the Evil man’s eyes
Then he shed a tear
He told the Evil man, “God is always with you-
There’s nothing to fear"

The Evil man spit in the Preacher's face and said,
"God is a waste of time"
I've been living a life of Hell-
and I’ve committed many acts of crime"

The Preacher wiped the spit from his face and said
“God forgives you and he will set you free”
The Evil man said, “God is a lie-
And no one cares or loves me”

The Preacher felt defeated and thought-
There is no hope for this man
But still the Preacher said,-
"Come with me, please take my hand"

The Evil man asked-
“Where do you want me to go?”
The Preacher said, “I will lead you away-
from the fires of Hell down below"

The Evil man laughed and said-
“I was cursed on the day of my birth
I was born to lead a life of evil-
here on this wicked earth”

The Preacher said,-
“Then all I can do for you is kneel down and pray"
The Evil man turned but before he left he said-
"Thank you Preacher maybe I will make it to Heaven one day"

As the Preacher watched the Evil man walk away
He was sorry the relationship had come to an end
But somehow and someway the Preacher felt-
that he had just made-a friend
