Written while pondering how my coffee and I have changed over the years.
When I was a child

You were lighter

than my hot cocoa

They'd splash

just a little you

in my cup

Drown you in milk

Shovel spoonfuls

of sweet, sweet sugar

I felt so grown up

When I first left home

I had to drink you

again

I was a grown up

out on my own

Grown ups drink coffee

Don't you know

You'd grown up too

Sensual caramel

A lot more coffee

and things became

a bit less sweet

Now I understood why

grown ups drank coffee

Now I knew it grew

from the seed of necessity

Now I had my own seeds

It's a funny thing

How those seeds did grow

and so did you

You don't hide

behind the milk anymore

The sweetness

comes from the jolt

I don't need your masks

Your truth is fine by me

So stand beside me

black as can be

Just be my coffee
