poem focusing on the 1st world war
SINS OF THE SOMME

Drudge drudge drudge - we march in time!
War is hell and war's a crime
The moral virtue of our words
In firefights seem so absurbed

Drudge Drudge drudge into the grave
Cannon Fodder, programmed slave
taught to hate and taught to kill
subhumans not people real
an abomination from another place
A devilish spirit with a human face

drudge drudge drudge - just marking time
Over the top like herded swine
living each moment as if its our last
Forever fearing that whistle blast

Its the sins of the Somme - you know what's wrong
the immoral position of being strong
The propaganda of "Gott mitt uns"
the un-nerving sky frieght of the big guns

Its the panic of mist mistaken for gas
the snipers "crack" and terminal flash
the "rat-a-tat-tat" of the Spandau crew
and Barbed Wire still holding true

Its the popppy fields like ears of corn
the officer class - all swagger and scorn
To which a dog soldier in this dog meat war
dares question what we're fighting for?
Then the voice that spoke up for good moral reason
Was shot at dawn for spreading treason
Its the sins of the Somme, The sins of the Somme - the sins!
