I was struggling against living my life to please others while ignoring my own voice.
An Ode to Pleasing Others

It doesn't matter what you want, what you feel, or what your heart desires,
just ignore all that or you'll be sure to burn in hell's fires.
If you just do things our way,
you'll be happy and everything will turn out OK.

But how can they say such things
when they've never felt pulled by these same strings.
They've never walked in my shoes
or felt trapped by their rules.
They've never played my part
and have no way of knowing what's in my heart.

It's the devil, no it's the meds,
wait no, you're just screwed up in the head.
Start thinking straight, don't exaggerate,
just hush up and eat what's on your plate.

But is it possible, could it be
that I know what's best for me?
And who decides where I reside,
the last time I checked, that right was still mine.

So take your guilt, your shame, your condemnation,
because I'm not playing them any more on my  FM station.
I won't be mean, I won't be cruel,
but my life I alone have the right to rule.

My heart will guide, I will follow
no, your conformity pill I will not swallow.
So save your words, please leave me be,
my situation you don't truly see.

I keep speaking, but you're not hearing,
your deafness is bewildering.
I will go on, I will not lay down,
my voice you will not drown.
