Skylar has dreamt of the same guy ever since she was five, but he's not real. Right?
There’s this saying, “If you can’t get someone out of your head, than maybe they’re supposed to be there.”
I have a question for whoever wrote that.
What if the person isn’t real?
~~~~~~~~
“You have another dream about that hottie?”
“No, stop asking.”
That was a lie. I dream about him every night, ever since I was a child.
I know not who he is, just that, he quite literally , is the man of my dreams.
Too bad he’s not real.
“Tell me about him again.” Cindy sighed, eyes glazing over.
“No.”
“Why not? Oh you just want to keep him all to yourself.”
“Cindy, he’s not real.”
“Skylar, you still dream about him, that makes him real enough.”
Letting out a sigh I smiled, glancing over at my pixie like friend.
“He’s tall, maybe six foot two, muscular, but not overdone. The muscles of a working man. Dark, almost black, brow hair, shaggy, just brushing against his eyebrows. A smile so absolutely amazing it makes your knees buckle, and blue eyes so bright you swear they’re glowing.
But don’t be fooled my dear pixie, it is not just his looks that will capture your heart, his personality will as well.
His deep melodic voice shares no hate or swears, just love, and respect.
This boy, this man, has no name, he has no breath, no heartbeat, no soul, because he’s not real.”
~~~~~~~~~~~
“Skylar, why are you crying?” My heart sank as his voice filled my ears.
“I can’t take this anymore. What is the point of all of this?”
“This?”
“This. You. You’re not real, we’re not real.”
My voice slowly crackled out as I looked to the ground.
These dreams had to end.
For eighteen years he’s concurred my thoughts, ever since I was five. We aged together, grew up together, he was my first crush, my first kiss, my first boyfriend, my first love, and it was all fake.
None of it was real.
I’ve been waiting out my life, waiting for him to actually show up and take me away, to tell me he loved me too.
But none of that will ever happen.
My life is nothing but a joke.
“Skylar, I’m more, real, than you think.” He smiled sadly before fading away.
“Wait! I lied! I don’t want you to go! I need you! Please, don’t go!”
Darkness over took my senses.
He was gone. Everything was gone.
What the hell was I going to do now?
~~~~~~~~
“You haven’t told me about your dream guy in weeks Sky.”
“That’s because I haven’t seen him in weeks Cindy.”
“What!? No way! You’re joking right?”
“No, I’m not joking. I haven’t seen him for two weeks. He’s gone.”
The college hallways held only a few lingering students such as myself and pix, which is probably why the guy in front of us heard my sorrow filled statement.
“Your boyfriend left you? Sorry to hear that.”
I swear on my life, if Cindy wasn’t next to me, I would have completely fallen over from shock.
“Y-you?”
“M-me? I’m sorry, do I know you?”
Oh my goddess. “I have to go.”
“Skylar! Where are you going!?”
“Home!”
“But I drove!”
Gasping for breath I shut the front door.
Exercise was never my strong suite.
“Was your class cancelled?”
“Uh, yeah. Teacher wasn’t there.”
Finally making it to my room, I plopped down on my bed, trying to keep the tears back.
Why did I want to cry?
The man from my dreams was quite possibly real.
The other reason, I might just be going crazy.
~~~~~~~
“What the fuck Skylar. Why’d you run? That guy was hot.”
“Cindy, I don’t know. I think I’m just, you know, seeing things.”
“What do you mean seeing things?”
Quietly I sat there, staring at the carpet.
“Sky, tell me.”
“It’s him Pix, it’s the guy from my dreams.”
~~~~~~~~~~~
“Do you think he’ll recognize you if you wear what you do in your dream?”
“Cindy, it’s like, western times. I wear a dress. And I’m not doing that. If he can’t recognize me without that, then maybe it’s not him.”
“And maybe it is. Oh! I know you’ll be excited about this.”
“What?”
“He’s in our class.”
“Oh fantastic! I just completely embarrassed myself in front of him yesterday and now we’re in the same class? At least I don’t’ have to sit next to him.”
“Actually, it seems we have the only college professor that likes assigned seating.”
“What are you saying?”
Hesitantly she met my eyes. “Yeah, you sit next to him.”
Eff my life.
And here comes the life ruiner now.
“Hey Cindy. Weird girl from yesterday.”
Really? Was that necessary?
“I have a name.”
“Oh I know, but it was great seeing the scowl on your face.” I could kick that smirk. “Skylar right?”
“Um, yeah. And you are?”
“Christopher. Pleasure to meet you.”
For some reason, that name just doesn’t sound right.
“But anyways, enough with the introductions, class is about to start, and I believe I have the honor of sitting next to you?”
“Apparently.”
“Well, lady’s first.”
Very gentlemanly he held the door open for us.
“Sit sit sit! I want to start today not tomorrow.”
Oh sweet Jesus.
This is gonna be hell
“Turn to the person at your table and introduce yourself.”
“Christopher.”
“We’ve been through this already.”
I can’t even look at him.
They’re like twins.
“I know that, but does she?”
Quickly I glanced at the teacher, who just happened to be glaring my way.
“I’m Skylar.” My body tensed as we shook hands.
Am I being punished?
“Now that everyone’s on the same page, that’s your partner for the rest of the term.
You will have assignments outside of class, so you’ll have to take time out of your busy partying schedules to do what you’re actually supposed to do in college.”
I think I officially hate this class.
……
“What class is this?”
“Mythology. How do you not know what class you’re in?”
“….I never signed up for Mythology.”
At this he turned his whole body towards me. “You are Skylar Jones right?”
“Yes.”
“Christopher Kale.”
Kale?
I seriously need to talk to Cindy.
“I feel like I know who signed me up for this.
The world will be one less pixie when this class is over.”
“Can I continue class now or are you not finished with your conversation?” Blankly I stared at the teacher. “Well?”
“Oh please proceed, don’t let us simple minded heethans keep you from lecturing everyone.”
I could hear everyone hold their breath as they awaited for the profe to react.
Finally, a smirk crossed her lips. “I like you kid, now shut up, I have things to say.”
Maybe this won’t be so bad after all.
~~~~~~~
“So Skylar, I’m going to need your information.”
“I don’t think so.”
Cindy gave me an odd look.
“It’s pretty much mandatory. Please Jones, I want to pass this class.”
“Sky? What’s going on?”
“I’m trying to get her number but she won’t give it to me.”
“Oh really? Well here, I’ll give it to you.”
“Cindy! What the hell.”
She gave me the ‘he’s hot, just do it’ look.
“My number is to be used for school purposes only. Understand?”
“Ma’am yes ma’am.”
There’s no way he’s the guy I used to dream of.
He’s too immature.
Once home, we decided to take a walk.
“Cindy, I could kill you. Why would you give him my number?”
“Well he kinda needs it to pass, you would like to pass as well wouldn’t you?”
“I didn’t even sign up for this class! You did.”
Smiling proudly she nodded. “I sure did.”
She’s never done this before, why is she so clingy this year?
“Hey pix?”
“Yeah?”
“Is there something you’re not telling me?”
I watched as Cindy began to fidget.
“No.” She scoffed, looking elsewhere. “No. Why would you think that?”
“Cindy, what aren’t you telling me?”
“Alright. I,” She sighed, tears welling in her eyes. “we’re moving next year. I have to go with my parents. I have no choice.”
My heart sank to my stomach.
“Well, where are you moving to?”
“Some tiny ass no named town twenty hours away. We won’t even be able to see each other that often.
I just figured you needed someone to make you happy while I’m gone. And since he’s the one you dreamt of, I figured he’d be perfect.”
My mind reeled from the information.
First I lose him, and now I lose Pix?
What the fuck am I going to do with myself?
I’ve never been away from Cindy for longer than a week.
“Sky?”
“We need to spend as much time together as humanly possible before you leave.
Oh god, my heart hurts.”
“That’s no good, that’s a sign of a heart attack. You should go to a doctor.”
Cindy and I jumped from the sudden intrusion.
“Kale? What are you doing here?”
“I live about three streets away, I like to go for walks. What about you guys?”
“We live on this street, don’t we Sky?”
Without warning, tears streamed down my face.
Why, of all times, did he have to show up now?
“Sh,” A warm sensation seeped through me. “It will be alright.”
I buried my face in Kale’s chest, for the first time in weeks feeling whole.
~~~~~~
“So, what the hell was that? Have you guys been talking this past week without telling me?”
“No, of course not. You know I would have told you.
Besides, it’s not like anything happened. He told you he lives a couple streets away, and then we went home.”
“He hugged you, because you were crying. . . .”
My confusion subsided. “Oh my goddess!! I thought that was a dream! That was real!?”
“Of course it was real! You clung onto him like your life depended on it.”
My cheeks blazed.
“No.”
“Yes.” Cindy mimicked my voice. “He let you.”
“Oh for the love of Pete. This is going to turn into something complicated.”
“Or something very beautiful.”
Rolling my eyes I took out my phone, sending a text to his way.
‘Hey Kale, thank you, and sorry for earlier.’
My heart pounded in my ears as I awaited a reply.
Oh god.
What if he doesn’t reply?
What if-
1 NEW MESSAGE
‘I would love to answer this, but I was told I can’t say anything that’s not school related.’
A slight smile crossed my lips.
Before I had the chance to reply, he sent another.
‘Maybe we could talk about our project. At the park perhaps?’
My heart raced.
Should I?
….
“Cindy, I gotta go. I’ll text you.”
“What?”
‘Sure. Heading over now.’
Quickly I bolted from the house, making my way to the park.
I shouldn’t be so nervous.
Scolding myself I sat on a swing, fidgeting with the chains.
I shouldn’t be so excited.
My eyes scanned the empty park, made slightly ominous due to the lowering sun.
Oh shit.
What if he doesn’t come?
What if he was only joking?
“Hey.” A hand grazed my back.
“Son of a bitch!”
I was so frightened, I could have fallen from the swing.
But I didn’t.
Because my hair was stuck in the chains.
“Help.” I whimpered, glancing back.
This is the only time I hate having long hair.
“You’re so lady like, and graceful!” He laughed helping me. “Like a completely different person.”
My mind momentarily went on high alert.
“W-what?”
“Uh, it’s just, your appearance is different than, how you actually are?” A sigh escaped his throat. “I don’t know what I mean.”
There was a moment of awkward silence.
“You have so much hair!” Again I heard the tone of surprise.
Am I imagining it?
He can’t be making connections to my dream self.
He doesn’t know about that.
“Yeah. I’ve been growing it out for a while.”
“How have I never noticed?”
I braided my hair quickly, perplexed.
“It’s not like we’ve known each other long. Besides, I usually have it up.” He eyes me for a moment. “Yoohoo. Earth to Kale.”
Snapping from his reverie he placed a hand on my back, pushing lightly.
“Why do you call me by my last name?”
I opened my mouth once or twice, trying to think of what to say.
“It just, suits you. Not that Christopher isn’t a great name! It’s just, when you said Kale it seemed right.”
He seemed to think about what to say next.
Suddenly, he stopped pushing me, standing perfectly still.
“That’s interesting. Someone else told me that when I was younger. I think we were, five at the time.”
The first time we played.
“I told her my name, and she told me she’d never call me Christopher. Until now, she was the only one to ever call me Kale.”
The swing had long since stilled, only moving slightly with the breeze.
“I’m sorry.” I craned my head back, looking up at him. “I’ll stop calling you that.”
With a small smile he shook his head.
“It wouldn’t feel natural to have you call me anything else.”
I smiled brightly, feeling at ease.
“Pardon my being so forward Sky, but, I think you are beautiful.”
My heart stopped and my mind reeled.
Kale stood before me, fidgeting nervously with the button on his vest.
“Pardon my being so forward Sky, but, I think you are beautiful.”
My skin flushed.
“Thank you.”
Hesitantly he stepped forward, his hand tracing my jaw, before he placed his lips tenderly upon my own.
My first kiss.
“I’m sorry, I just made things awkward.”
Plopping on the other swing he avoided my gaze.
“N-no. It just, shocked me is all. Thank you, by the way.” Nervously I laughed. “You’re quite the looker yourself.”
Kale’s eyes connected with mine, and then, it happened.
We burst into uncontrollable laughter.
This is going to be a fun friendship.
