We have a tendency at times to hide our feelings behind the veil of our smile.
BEYOND THE VEIL OF WHAT YOU SEE

Beyond the veil of what you see
Is the real me.

I'm very good at hiding
What I don't want anyone to see.

The veil is the fake smile,
It's that wanting you to believe,
Everything's fine with me.

I've got to hide the pain inside,
I can't let you know.

I'm supposed to be a child of God,
I'm supposed to have the victory.

I'm supposed to overflow with joy
and gratitude.

So I place this veil upon my face,
To hide the pain, shame and disgrace.

You can't judge me by the things
You don't know.
So I'll keep this veil upon my face.

But beyond the veil is the real me.
The real me is ugly you see.

The real me has scars that run deep.
The person you'd really see weeps from a sordid history.

Take the veil away and here's reality.
I'm not the person you see.
I'm the person hiding me.

I have to wear this veil
because if I don't
You may not like me.
You’ll judge me.
You might gossip about me.

If I could only trust you.
If I could only believe you'd
Pray for me.
That you'd love the real me.

I stand beside you on most Sundays.
We both go to church.
I raise my hands and even dance,
That's a part of my veil as well.

The point I want to make is this:
Just because I have you fooled.
The real me needs a hug.
I need you to pray for me,
In-spite of what you see.

Because under the smile is me.
