Heart Visits

Vacant, sterile expressions:
daguerreotypes required a stillness,
no movement. Spontaneity was not an option.
Sepia-toned, or monochromatic visages
staring goggle-eyed: one didn’t dare blink.
The vibrant grandmother I remember from long ago,
she of lemonade-colored hair,
embroidered gowns
and flashing smile
rendered flat, colorless,
almost cold upon the velum.
Yet, perusing back in time,
a warm knot forms in my heart and colors
blossom, wash over the photographs.
Memory serves as palette,
transformation ensues and
suddenly, there she is;
exactly as I remember.
