Mallory Boggs and Evan Winters have more in common than they think.
Malerie Boggs
In life I was never pretty
or smart
or the object of anyone’s affections. I was incredibly ordinary,
In the plainest sense of the word.
My heart ached
With the realization that I was not as
Important as previously thought.
So I sulked and wasted my life away,
Pining for a boy I would never have,
And a future that could never be.
My heart ached
Until he called me that night
With the silent promise of an opportunity so sweet.
Redemption, I thought.
Until I arrived at the venue,
Silence deafening my ears,
No sign of life
Or light.
I had been deceived by whom I trusted the most.
Evan Winters had not meant to hurt me.
But as my body sank down
To the bottom
Of the lake,
Both me and the company reached a similar conclusion.
Death?
Discernment?
They go hand in hand.

Evan Winters
I never asked for
Forgiveness of that night.
My father always told me about how our God,
Our all-knowing God,
Forgives and forgets.
I can not forgive, my soul will not let me forget.
She did not deserve what was handed to her.
They say guilt can drive a good man mad.
I agree, although I never was a “good” man.
My hand did not shake as it pulled the trigger,
The interior of my truck filling with acrid smoke as it bled out of the cracked window.
They never found that truck,
At the bottom,
Of the lake.
A fitting end.
