Companionship
The sidewalk, rough and colored charcoal,
gave heat to the dog, warming his skin,
There was shade from an Elm with orange and red leaves,
but the dog found a stink under his chin.

A man lying there, wrapped in dark bedding
made room for the dog, under his arm.
A small cup holding a watch and some change
did nothing at all to keep the dog warm.

The man sat up slowly and stared at the beast,
the dog nudged the cup and nodded his head.
The contents fell out and spread on the ground,
The man found some water to fill it instead.
