A Villanelle Poem
JOAN OF ARC

When battle's end looked gray and dark
And the cause seemed all but lost
No one had faith like Joan of Arc

The fate of France was bleak and stark
Til words of God her journey crossed
When battle's end looked gray and dark

Though France would greet her rude with snark
She'd burn from France cold England's frost
No one had faith like Joan of Arc

She drove them from French town and park
Could Joan have guessed the final cost
When battle's end looked gray and dark

Then England came to trap the lark
Whose song their plans had torn and tossed
No one had faith like Joan of Arc

Though England finally made its mark
Sent Joan to fiery holocaust
When battle's end looked gray and dark
No one had faith like Joan of Arc
