A sestina about past drama and trying to push past it.
Rubber Band
[Hands, Pain, Band, Back, Glue, Hope]

What image appears when you look at your hands?
Is it something of innocence or something of pain
(Move to your wrist) just like a rubber band
When you pull back the elastic it will snap right back
How’d it go? “I am rubber; you are glue.”
Nevertheless it’s true... At least I hope.

A new mindset- a new year- will fill me with hope.
It’s a fresh start so time to wash your hands
Yet the past is stuck to you like gorilla glue
If you try to pick it off, it only brings pain.
Your back has the knife; your wrist has the band.

You try to pull away but again there’s the band.
It still exists and you’re losing hope
You can’t quite reach that knife in your back.
What’s that red liquid now on your hands?
When will it numb (Is that what you call pain?)
Even the blood won’t remove past’s glue.

Mineral spirit removes pain but how about glue
Though it’s not paint left on that rubber band
(I’m lost) Is this a joke, is it false pain?
It has to be false! Where’s my hope?
Who’s lies and deceit are left on my hands?
It’s just like tar so take it right back

The fresh start becomes fresh scars on your back
But you can’t close those wounds with super glue
Because it’s the future not past that’s left in your hands
And to get to the future you need to break the band
Metaphorical scissors are now my last hope
Except knives and scissors both cause pain

Yet with scissors you can control the pain
Cut it out of your life, knives out of your back
No longer incarcerated and again filled with hope
Just so you know the turpentine removes glue
And only the smallest snip to cut the band
Remove it from your wrist and your hands

(Goodbye old pain, gone goes the glue,
never come back so go away rubber band)
Hold that new hope tight in your hands
