the fourth of my Niklas/Elizabeth series, Like A Rainbow
Walking hand-in-hand to the parenting class they decided to take together, Niklas and Elizabeth were in high spirits. Despite what Elizabeth had been through to get pregnant (Thank the Lord those...people were in jail now) both of them looked forward to being parents. Tove and Andrew as well as Niklas's two brothers, Mattias and Staffan, offered to help the young couple in anyway they could.

Niklas looked down at his little love, his precious girl, and smiled, rubbing his thumb over the back of her hand.

“Yes, love?”

Blushing under his gaze, Elizabeth, tucking her books farther under her arm so they wouldn't fall, replied, “I'm nervous. I'm sure no one in the world with autism has been pregnant but me.”

“Untrue.” Continuing to walk towards the giant building with his girl beside him, he went on, “Lots of people who are autistic get pregnant. Not as often as normal people do, but still. Just ignore anyone who says anything about you being that way. They aren't important.”

Reassured at last, Elizabeth stretched up onto her tippy-toes and brushed her lips across his cheek, just the way she had when the two of them first met.

“Thank you!” Eyes lighting up like diamonds in the sky once more, she gave his hand a tug and tried to drag him to the school. “We have to go. Got lots of stuff to learn today and we don't want to be late.”

“Slow down.” In a firm but gentle tone, Niklas pulled her back close to his chest and wrapped an arm around her waist. “We'll be fine. You cannot run when you are pregnant. That won't be good for you or the baby. Running while you are pregnant can make you sick.”

“Yes, Nicky.” Elizabeth pushed her face into Niklas's strong chest, her left arm flapping and tears starting to stream down her cheeks because she believed, in her head, that her boyfriend was mad at her.

“Shh.” Slipping his arm around her shoulders, Niklas squeezed her tight against him, being mindful of her stomach, and pressed a kiss, soft as a whisper, to her forehead. “I'm not mad at you, little one, I just don't want you to get hurt or hurt the baby. The both of you are very important to me and I couldn't bare it if I lost either of you.”

Elizabeth's heart fluttered in her chest at the words. It had been a year, almost two years, well, actually, a heart and a half, since they'd meet, and yet, she could still be surprised at his sweetness and gentleness, not only to her, but to others as well.

“I love you, Nicky.”

Niklas planted a kiss on the top of her head, took her hand again, and started up the journey to the building where the class was being held.

“I love you, too. Are you nervous?”

He pushed open the heavy wooden black-painted door of the building and held it open so that Elizabeth could walk through before following her inside.

“A little. I'm more excited than nervous, though. It's a great thing we're doing.”

“Yes, it is, love. You go on and find the room we are supposed to be in. I need to look for a bathroom. I'll meet you in there, okay, sweet girl?” Niklas asked, kissing gently behind the shell of her ear.

“Okay, Nicky. I will do that for you.”

15 minutes later

Elizabeth grunted and shifted herself in Niklas's lap, feeling uncomfortable. Dammit, why did being pregnant have to be so hard? She loved, adored, actually, would be the better word, to sit in Niklas's lap because it made her feel safe. But now, with a big belly, it didn't feel as nice.

“Babe?” Lips brushed against her ear as hands rubbed over the aforementioned stomach. “Do you need to get up and walk?”

“I just got up and walked. I'm fine. I promise.”

Their class teacher, Ms. Wilkox, who also was pregnant, looked over her shoulder at the young couple.

“Elizabeth, if you need to walk, feel free to do so. I know, it is so uncomfortable to sit down when you are pregnant. But please try to whisper next time, okay?”

“Yes, ma'am. I'm sorry.”

“No worries. I-”

“Ms. Wilkox? Is Elizabeth here? I need to check her vitals.”

In the doorway stood a tall, handsome man with soft brown eyes and black hair with a little blond stop curled up in front. His name was Zayn Malik and he'd been a doctor for sixteen years.

Both Niklas and Elizabeth stood up from their seats and, once again, hand-in-hand, walked to the doorway and followed Zayn down a long, white-washed hallway to his office.

-I hope my vitals are good-was Elizabeth's last thought before taking a deep breath and stepping inside.
