What I felt
Slow dull throb,
That's how it comes on at first.
Waits there, beating
until you decide to breathe.

Then hard solid hammer thumps.
Bang, bang on your insides.
A cold steel sledgehammer smack.
Someone wants attention.

Movement is out of the question.
The slightest accommodating adjustment to my position,
and you get the knife thrust.
through to the centre of its existence.

Try some substantial rearranging of self,
and it will let you know who's the Boss.
Hot wires will radiate from its core.
growing larger as they spider-leg out.

Nothing works to ease the pain.
Let it play out, curse it out loud.
It will reel itself back in,
until you decide to wake it once more.
