No Fairy Tale for Us

If I think too long
or too hard about you
about us
It all comes bubbling up
to the surface:
this great calamity
we find ourselves in
So I keep my thoughts of you
light and shallow and frivolous
otherwise I fall to pieces
and I break like glass
(into an infinite number of shards)
Because there’s not gonna be
a perfect ending for us
and we won’t get to have
a happily ever after
Our story will be
nothing more than
wishes denied, hopes dashed
