A song about moving in the right directions
Last night, you looked up from the dog that you were petting
and said the thing about this life that's most upsetting
Is your nagging fear you won't live up to who you're meant to be

'Cause when everyone around is making moves,
what can you do when you just don't know what to do?
Could they all leave you behind, at least potentially?

But if you ever stop to think about
everything you're overthinking
and how it's left you stuck here staring inward
for hours and hours without blinking

Eventually you have to wonder
why we so dutifully go through it
We've memorized the score they wrote us,
now I think it's time we face the music

So let's try left, right, left
you know nothing'll change until we take those first few steps
So let's try right, left, right
one foot after the other until we hit our stride

And we could stay up 'til the sunrise
sharing things we'd like to do,
but if we're only ever talking,
well, then darling, what's the use?

I sat through a pandemic
waiting for my life to begin,
and now I'm awfully sick of sitting,
so be a dear and count us in

It starts with left, right, left
if you can just get going, then your feet will do the rest
And then it's right, left, right
Can't promise things'll change, but I promise you they might

It won't come easily at first,
but then what good thing does?
The trick is trudging through for long enough
to see it's worth the fuss

Even if you end up hating me,
and we fall to our worst fears,
it beats spending who knows how long
stuck doing nothing here

C'mon now, left, right, left
Let's go and just keep going until we need to catch our breath
then back to right, left, right
not until your legs are jelly, just until your head feels light

And if you can't make it out tonight,
I promise I'll be fine-
there'll always be another show,
we have plenty of time

But the venue lights are dimming and
they'll want me onstage soon,
So if I can't see you in the crowd,
I'd better hear you from your room

Sing with me left, right, left-
doesn't matter how you start, just as long as the other's next
And it's right, left, right
If we make it through right now, we can make it through the night
If we can make it through right now, we're gonna make it through the night
