The hurt need love
I was the only witness of your awkward smile, just as your father offered some dollars for your new life at the apartment. You were crying minutes before we heard his car (I let you believe I hadn't noticed), and got right back to it the second the elevator doors closed on his way out. I hugged you because I agree: this should be love. Or at least feel like it. But when my hands are around you and my skin is your skin, I make sure you know how hard it is to not yell "I love you! I love you! I love you!"; and again as we are almost inside; and free.
