POEM ABOUT THE EARLY DAYS ON AN ISLAND WHERE I GREW UP

Flames, heat, and warmth from a blazing fire
Brings thoughts to mind of earlier days.

My dad at sea
Huddled around, keeping cozy.

Mum nearby comforting us with her softest of tones
Winds lashed against the rusty old roof
The tide is high.

Waves roared from outside the windows
Meters from our house.

One often wondered was Dad safe to battle the treacherous waters
So many oceans and dangerous obstacles between us.

We prayed and hoped that Dad would return home safely
On that ghastly stormy, dark night.

One often wondered if Dad was safe battling the treacherous waters
So many oceans and dangerous obstacles between us.

Thousands of storms have passed through the
Well-known Bass Strait.

Lives have been lost and homes destroyed
Ships have been wrecked, animals have suffered.

Never turn your back on a storm
You can`t hide from them
Nor should you try.

Flinders is a little Island with a strong backbone
We are survivors.

We support each other.
Watching each other grow.

That destructive storm from so long, long ago
It hasn`t destroyed our spirit.

Never turn your back on a storm
You can`t hide from them
Nor should you try.

WE ALWAYS FIGHT BACK
READY FOR THE NEXT STORM THAT CROSSES OUR PATH
NO STORM CAN BREAK OUR FAITH OR LOVE
