April's Change Of Heart

“It happens every year on this day, Mom! Everybody says it to my face! They think it’s so funny!” April complained.

“Ignore it.” her mother said as she set her breakfast down in front of her.

“I try to, but it gets to me more and more as the day goes on. One day I’m gonna just blow!”

“Long as you keep it to words, go for it. No real blows, okay?”

April gritted her teeth, then nodded.

“I’ll try but I can’t promise. It’s just so annoying!”

“I know you’ll do you best. Maybe some jokes will help,” Mom said as she handed April her lunch and shooed her out to catch the bus.

April arrived at the stop just in time to hear the dreaded phrase.

“April fool!”

In her best Mr. T. imitation, she replied,” I pity the fool...” and turned away.

“What’s up with you, girl?” asked one of her girlfriends.

“I’m tired of being called a fool because my name is April.”

“Is that what you think? It ain’t you they’re talkin to. Mostly they’re telling lies with a straight face, then yellin’ April Fool as they split a gut laughin’”, her friend explained.

“Well, I try to ignore them, but someone always says it today.”

“They must like you, if they try an April Fool’s joke on you. You have lots of friends.”

Since April had never thought of it that way before, she decided to take it as it was probably meant, as a sign people liked her enough to joke with her. When the next person came up, told her something preposterous, she went along with it. When they finally said the words, she had always resented, she laughed as loud as they did and felt much better.
