Coy Dogs Lurking About El Sobrante

Sam Adams was getting ready
For a rare date night with his wife
Going to a costume ball Halloween gala
San Francisco Symphony gala concert.

The dress code included a tall top hat
And full tuxedo for men
And red cocktail dresses for the ladies.

He worried about his spotted chicken
And the out-of-control coy dogs
Lurking around his El Sobrante
Rural farmhouse.

He hoped his chickens
Would survive the night
The coy dogs have been active
In the neighborhood.

According to his pot smoking
Neighbor, Mr. Chuck
Known to all as the Chuckmiester.

Mr. Chuck promised to watch the chickens
and put the fear of the Chuckmiester
in the coy dogs and mountain lions.
showing off his weapons
recently purchased
from their mutual friend
Mr. Weaver
From the old gun shop.

author notes:

the coydog is a new species of coyote – mixed coyote and feral dogs- that has become the dominant coyote species out west. The coy dog is used to urban environments, including knowing how to cross streets. Bing Co-Pilot provides more information
Coy dog is a fascinating canid hybrid resulting from the mating of a male coyote and a female dog. These hybrids, regardless of their sex, are fertile and can be successfully bred for up to four generations. Similarly, a doggie is a hybrid with a dog father and a coyote mother.
Here are some key points about coy dogs:
• Appearance: Coy dogs vary in appearance but generally retain the coyote’s adult coat color, dark neonatal coat color, bushy tail with an active supra caudal gland, and white facial mask. First-generation (F1) hybrids tend to be intermediate in form between dogs and coyotes, while second-generation (F2) hybrids exhibit more variation.
• Behavior: They inherit shyness and intersexual aggression from their coyote parents. Their play behavior even includes the famous coyote “hip-slam”.
• History: Coy dogs were deliberately bred in pre-Columbian Mexico, where coyotes were highly regarded. Indigenous peoples in Canada also mated coyotes and wolves with their sled dogs to produce more resilient animals.
• Population: True coy dogs are rare and are not commonly found in the wild. They should not be kept as pets due to their challenging temperament.
• Fun Fact: A population of non-albino white coyotes in Newfoundland owes their coloration to a mutation inherited from Golden Retrievers.
So, next time you encounter a coy dog, appreciate the fascinating blend of these two canid species! 🐕🐺

El Sobrante is a surprising rural area in the San Francisco East Bay where residents have cattle, chickens and horses and coy dogs and mountain lions are frequently spotted in the hills. It is just east of Richmond, and San Pablo, California, and west of Tilden and Wild Cat regional parks and the San Pablo Dam.
