real babies
One day old and invincible
Cocooned in white
With eyes
Too honest to deceive
Lips
Untrained in dishonesty
Brazen Bold
The centre of the Universe.

Ignoring
The ignorant salvoes
Volleyed from the mouths
Of fawning amateur detectives
His father's nose
Mother's eyes
And sister's jaw
Meaningless drivel
The self-deluded cuckold
Seeing his own face
In another man's child
Is not his concern
His parentage irrelevant.

With the singlemindedness
Of a shark scenting blood
His toothless gums
Seek the nipple
Direct and true.

Attached
Bleary-eyed and belligerent
He observes his domain
Disdaining ugly adult grins
His smiles are his own
Whether of pain
Or laughter
At this stage
Remains his secret.

Creator of havoc
Wrinkled feet
And tiny hands
With the grip of a dentist
Blind to the turmoil
Sleeping
In the eye of the hurricane
Whilst around him
Others fortunes
Are driven by his gale.
