The mother poured herself a third drink
the father is out of town for work again
the brother is getting caught smoking pot
the sister is finding out she's pregnant
the child sits in the corner reading a book.

The mother cries herself to sleep
the father is still not home after two weeks
the brother is leaving for college
the sister is moving in with a different boy
the adolescent finishes his homework.

The mother, the father, the brother, and the sister are waiting for that emptiness to go away.

The mother is telling the teen to fuck off
the father is trying to get a divorce
the brother is not calling
the sister is getting hit by her boyfriend
the preteen is asking the mother why can't I help?

The mother is not hearing anything
the father sits alone
the brother is getting punched in the face
the sister is putting the baby up for adoption
the young teen is staring at the gun cabinet.

The mother, the father, the brother, and the sister are wondering what's so wrong with their lives.

The mother isn't leaving her room
the father is calling home but doesn't speak
the brother is dying because he was driving drunk
the sister is watching her boyfriend leave her
the teen grips his head in pain

The mother sits all by herself watching TV
the father is finding out he has cancer
the brother is on a respirator
the sister us trying to overdose
the young adult is pulling the trigger

The mother, the father, the brother, and the sister all look up at what seems like nothing.

The mother is putting her hands over her face
the father is grimacing in anxiety
the brother is sitting silently
the sister is smearing her mascara with tears
the young adult is dead.
