Who would you choose? (Not a true story)
I watch in horror as they come up the path,
Their expressive faces filled with wrath.
The scowls, the tightness that tics in their jaw,
A ball of guilt sticks in my craw.
I am at fault for their awash of pain,
I am responsible, and I feel great shame.
For both are wonderful, supportive men,
And it is my own weakness that caused this end.
One a new love that gave me his heart,
The other a friend that’s been there from the start.

I’m out the door before the knock sounds,
No sense in pretending that I’m not around.
I stand in front; ready to admit to my lies,
But I’m stopped short, to my great surprise.
“We both love you, and yes, we are upset,”
Began my new love as he shifts on the steps.
“But you love us both, and it’s hard to choose,”
Continues my friend, as he looks at his shoes.
“We are willing to forgive, but now we must know,
Which one of us will stay, and which one will go?”

I’m shocked into silence by their generosity,
There is not a reason at all they should even forgive me.
I look at them closely, from one to the next,
And know that this shall be my biggest test.
For as generous their heart, I can see the truth,
I may get one, but the other I’ll lose.
Who’s more important, who touches my soul?
Who will be in my future, which is my goal?
The answer comes to me as easy as pie,
And with tears on my face, I step to his side.
