Spiritual poem, Culture religious plea for one last chance to live a good life.
Oh Great Spirit can you hear me?
I feel so lost and oh so lonely,
So hard I tried,
And then I cried,
I lost my step once again,
Wondering just where I had been,
Loosing my way through the great black hills pines
I prayed and prayed to find a way,
Back to a good life, to try and stay
Back again to where I belong.
Now I offer yet another song,
Red prayer ties are hung with care,
Upon a lonely pine, as I stand and stare.
Yellow cloth flags upon their stakes,
Still stand tall, I hope it's all it takes,
When the violet predawn sky awakes,
I offer my flesh with a cut of my knife.
Sing my song and pray for a better life.
My eyes look up to the bright morning star,
As my blood flows, my sacrifice from afar,
No sound is heard as I wait for a sign,
I look for my spirit guide to help me find
My way back to the good red road
And walk alongside me as I carry the load.
In search of a small sun ray,
To guide me in the right direction, there I will stay.
Hopefully my spirit will guide me, not leading me astray,
I pray out loud for the courage to go on,
For strength to love again, to place my hands upon
My heart, and hope for a love in return.
I light a bundle of sage and let it burn,
Sweet smoke caresses my body, I smudge to be pure
To start again, innocent and clean to be sure,
My song and prayers might be sent
To the Great Spirit above, to visit the place where my ancestors went.

The morning dew and fresh cool air
I breathe in, knowing it will take me there,
Now laying upon the ground, my mother earth
So tortured and hurt.
I feel her pain and her blood mix with mine
Knowing I will take my final journey in time.
Relatives, family, friends and animals I will see
Their smiling faces will shine
They will welcome me and soon I will be fine.
My heart will feel love once again
Love I so desperately seek and then
I cower, so afraid to accept, running away
Hiding from people, staying behind at bay,
Alone in a dark room, holding on to grief,
Broken heart and misery are my thief.
Shattered dreams lay like broken shards of glass
Lost courage and faith rust like ancient brass,
Shrouded by fear, I cry for one last chance
I cry out to you, Oh Great Spirit to hear my voice
Asking for courage, faith and love, It is your choice.
Before my final song is sung and prayer said,
My death song to end what is already dead.
