It would be wonderful to walk in the sunshine again...
The window frame is in sharp contrast
To the dim light passing through the curtains.
I lie here,
Thinking of times long ago,
When the world used to be clean,
Innocent of all wrongdoing.
I once could walk,
Then I went to Afghanistan.

Thunder rumbles in the distance,
Lightning flashes across the sky
Illuminating the room that is now my home.
I lie here,
Thinking of times long ago,
Life was meant to be enjoyed
And sometimes it was easy.
I once looked forward to tomorrow,
Then I went to Afghanistan.

The ceiling glows dimly
As I light a cigarette.
That is all I can do now.
I lie here,
Thinking of times long ago
When it was fun being young.
The future was a bright place.
I once could sleep at night,
Then I went to Afghanistan.

To those who serve and face adversity,
We salute you.
