A coward's retreat
Wrong time

Worn out cliché
Convince yourself
Ease your conscience
Wrong Place

Kidding a kidder
Avoiding the truth
Face up to reality
Wrong Person

Whose feelings are spared?
I've used it myself;
"It's not you, It's me!"
