Memories of love lost
LOVE’S WARMTH

I sit through the night draped in
The old faded red shawl
That you once gifted to me,
I distinctly recall.

In the days of tender youth,
Together I and you,
Sat with racing heart and breath,
Often all evening through.

We sat silent in the warmth
Of love for each other,
Unmindful of falling snow,
Forgetting the shiver.

Those happy moments will now
Return to me never.
The sweetest joy of your love
Could not last for ever.

When you started feeling weak
And cancer was revealed,
Little could the doctors do,
The fate of love was sealed.

They gave you but a few days,
Your illness had advanced;
I remember what you said
Towards me as you glanced:

“I am now going afar,
You keep this shawl, my love.
It will keep me close to you,
Though I be far above.
