A short poem about coming to terms with the end of a relationship.
I sway
as I follow
the giggling fish
Down paths turned velvet gold
in street light
to that old romantic cemetary
Where we'd picnicked
in the grass by the pond
and listened for
that swell of jazz
from somewhere.

There I will immerse myself
in ceremonies of harmony
Then, forever,
nevermore
wishing for . . .
Before consumed under
the broken crust of the desert
Now I'm reconciled
to remembering
a kiss
on the lyrical fingers of devotion

The fish, finally quiet, composed,
fins falling from the pedals,
listens to the twist and wail
around our waning frolic.
Flash of light in the sun,
water fading,
scales fall back from. . .
and underneath the weighty
ripples
of the surface.
