i wrote this after my best friend moved out of state. one of my first attempts at poetry.
You, my dear friend,
have been all I want and more.
You have been my hope, my sister,
You have been my confidant.

You have given me
a shoulder to cry upon,
lent me a listening ear.
You have helped pull me together,
when all I wanted was to die.

You have critiqued and comforted,
shown me my true worth.
You have wept with me,
laughed with me,
been more than just a friend.

But now, dear sister,
our paths are being cleft,
And I do not know
when next they will entwine.

Sister dear, sister mine,
I cannot bear to comprehend
The differences that Time will carve
In the years we are apart.

And I cannot help but realize
all the firsts that we will miss.
The first kisses, the first loves,
The first heartbreaks
We will live.

You won’t be here to comfort me,
nor I to comfort you,
When all the world seems bleak,
and empty and untrue.

And yet I can but hope, dear sis,
that this is not the end.
That this is but the start
of something unforeseen.

But hope does seem so weak and small
When I’ve always known the truth;
That not only am I losing you,
I’m losing half of me.
