Sweet and sad memories of a once-upon-a-time
I remember
witty banter,
repartee and
innuendo mixed with
a healthy dose of painful puns;
the blue blue of eyes
I thought I could drown in
and the wicked laugh
of an evil thought trying
not to be spoken.

I forget
giving you my heart
or how it was I asked.
you answered yes
I walked on clouds for
weeks through that winter.

I remember
being both
the suffocated and suffocating in turn,
wanting badly for my own little space
and too afraid to say so
for fear I might be left to that
space alone.

I forget
what the arguments were about
only that they happened.
I forget the reason for the tears or laughter
only that we shared them.

I remember
puddle jumping
and singing in the chandeliers
of a children's playground
high up on the roof of the world
under the stars.

I forget too
how many nights by the window
waiting sleeplessly
watching for the return
that never came.

I remember
a surprise phonecall
a day after my birthday.
Too short a call
Too long pauses
looking for words
we could not say.

I remember
sudden hellos
at a bus stop.
The ride too short to catch up
on all the moments in between.
Going for coffee
and talking around the bush
of what had been.

I remember
blue blue eyes
honest laughter
fierce hugs
and gentle touch.
Playing "what if" till dreams
caught us,
dragonfruit and mango
shared with the sun.

If I forget all else
I remember
You.
