Short poem about children at christmas time
THE WAIT

Itching bodies under the covers
Listen!
A rustle of paper and
an eager ear twitches
Can you hear him?

A thump from downstairs
Listen!
Covers thrown back and
small feet pad around
Can you hear him?

Back into bed
Quick!
A chink of light then
darkness again
I saw him!

Get up! The darkness is still thick
Sshh!
Creeping down the stairs and
the door
creaks
open

A black bag
full of wishes and shining paper
He’s been!
