The Sun Dial

Out and away by the old sun dial
Autumn winds came to whisper for awhile
To keep me company where I lay
Only here with me they would not stay

So I sat alone in the empty field
And waited for the sun to yield
And waited for what the winds would whisper
So I sat alone as the air grew crisper

Upon the grass where I would lie
I watched the stars arise in the sky
Up over yonder where they did creep
Until I slowly drifted off into sleep

Gently coasting into the dream
I lived without living and died without dying
And journeying to old sanity’s seam
It seemed so sweet as I flew without trying

And in my rest I saw it coming
As quietly as the maiden’s humming
But then I knew it was too late
I could not change what would be my fate

Before my actions could synthesize
I was overtaken by darkest surprise
So then I did look into her eyes
To see little more than charming old lies

Like a sudden gust over windswept Dover
I awoke to find my love was over
Easing down through skies of grey
My mind drifted so softly away

With the bitter leaves old and fallen
I thought I heard the muse come callin
To show my soul where to go
So it could shelter before the snow

Then down he came along with the wind
To send unto bed those who’d sinned
Ever so quickly my feelings did splinter
As along with a rush came old man winter

And the old man came to besiege with Ice
But soon new feelings will suffice
On a sweet day of spring wrought awe
A warm sun will come to thaw
