A poem about abortion.
“Treasure of Life”

In the womb of a mother
A new life begins,
So small and so subtle
That no one can see it.
It is the beginning
Of the treasure of life.

In the womb of a mother
A new baby is formed,
Delicate eyes shut,
Tiny fingers clenched,
In a desire to live.
It is the formation
Of the treasure of life.

In the womb of a mother
A baby shakes in fear,
At the sense of the arrival
Of the murderer dressed in white.

In the womb of a mother
A baby shrills a silent cry,
No one hears
No one cares
Of his impending death.

In the womb of a mother
A baby’s struggle to survive,
Was rashly cut off,
His grip on life gone.
Cruelty and neglect
Had once again won.

For the womb was now his tomb
And his body rubbish,
Carelessly thrown away
Along with all the others.
Carelessly thrown away
Was the treasure of life.

In the womb of a mother
A hope was destroyed
A promise broken
A life slaughtered.

When will we learn
That life is not cheap?
When will we learn
To cherish life?

In the womb of a mother
A baby was taken for granted,
Now forever forgotten
Are the memories of him,
Forever lost
Is the treasure of life.
